This course aims to give a brief overview of dramatic works by Eugene O’Neill, the first major American playwright, the only American Nobel Prize winner dramatist, and four-time Pulitzer Prize winner. O’Neill’s singular voice elevated American drama to the world’s recognition and established it as a modern, fully developed literary genre. O’Neill was influenced by European Modernist drama as well as classical drama, but he shaped all his sources into a distinctive, strong, and specifically American voice. From his short plays of the sea, through to expressionist drama and experiments, to modern classics of the American stage, O’Neill’s plays remain defined by emotionality, pointed dramaticality and singular expressivity, while relating to general human and specifically American themes. The course aims to provide an overview of O’Neill’s development as a playwright and cultural icon.
