The course combines the Czech and Anglo-American stylistics traditions. Students will work with non-literary texts but the literary ones will be considered as well. The objective is to make students understand the functional interpretation and construction of texts, and to distinguish a number of stylistic devices used in a number of different registers (e.g. register of newspapers and magazines, advertising, face-to-face interaction, comics etc.). At the end of the course students will be able to understand the key concepts and definitions in stylistics, to distinguish different registers, to recognize different linguistic patterns used as stylistic devices, and to analyze and create various texts.
