The course examines the genre of fairy tales from the perspective of contemporary linguistics, focusing on how meaning is constructed through narration, characterization, discourse, and multimodality. It applies methods from (multimodal) discourse analysis, stylistics, pragmatics, and social semiotics, and it addresses topics such as narrative structure, space and time, characterization, conversation, cohesion, visual communication, gender, and ideology. Through the analysis of written and audiovisual fairy tales, students develop the ability to critically examine how linguistic and semiotic choices construct meaning and reflect social and cultural values.
