This course explores the role of communication in professional contexts and addresses topics such as meetings and negotiations, relational talk, leadership, branding and crisis communication. In this way, it considers professional communication from multiple perspectives, including those of (prospective) clients and the public, colleagues and other professionals. By combining theoretical and empirical insights, the course introduces students to current (applied) linguistic research in this area and supports them in applying selected concepts from linguistics (e.g., (im)politeness, genre, turn-taking, narrative, identity work) to the analysis of communicative situations in professional settings. In the course, students reflect critically on communication in different professional contexts and analyze authentic discourse data as well as discuss plausible professional scenarios.
