The course focuses on multi-word units – idioms, collocations and phrasal verbs – across a selected range of domains, with the aim of expanding students’ vocabulary and helping them use English more fluently and naturally. In addition to this practical aim, the course provides a theoretical perspective on multi-word units by introducing students to selected influential works in the field of lexicology. Students will become familiar with major linguistic accounts and key theoretical approaches to these phenomena. Both classic and more recent papers will be examined, analysed and discussed in class, allowing students to explore how the study of multi-word units has developed over time. The course therefore combines vocabulary development with theoretical engagement, giving students the opportunity to improve their practical command of English while also gaining insight into the linguistic study of multi-word units.
